Uncaged: World Fighters

 Overview

Uncaged: World Fighters is a MMA inspired Fighting Card game developed by ZeMind Game Studio.

I worked on this title during my Co-op period during the summer of 2018. My role was one of Game Designer where I worked on two expansions for the game: The Wrestling Deck and The Tae-kwon-do Deck.

Role:
Game Designer

My job was to closely look at each fighting style we were trying to re-create and find as much reference as I can. From there I would try and fit them within a card game format.

The process in which I designed cards was to watch and listen to professional UFC fights and martial arts tournament. From there I would listen to the announcers closely as they described what was transpiring and as they detailed strategies. From there I would take these and interpret them into a card game format.

Once a card was designed, either for a specific set or a stand alone card. I would enter the card into the database and test the card out against other decks. After a few balance and wording changes the card would be officially entered and be placed in the appropriate deck.

As a company we also traveled around to conventions such as Ottawa Comicon, Bravocon, Fan Expo, Anime North and more. There we raised awareness for the game and tried to get new members to play and buy the game.

What I  Learned

During my time at ZeMind I learnt a lot about coming into an existing project and picking up where other employees left off. I learnt how to adhere to their design rules about the game and how to make cards that fit their mold.

I also learnt a great deal of balancing as well as how to conduct multiple playtesting sessions and adjust cards accordingly.

This was the first project I had encountered working with a Lead Designer. Reporting to him and following his design rules and creating cards that he liked taught me how to fit my designs within his own.
